Rivers Fitness is trialling a sponsorship scheme to tackle the growing number of inactive teens in the district.
The scheme, run in partnership with Pershore Riverside Youth Centre, has seen two teenagers from the youth centre sponsored to use the gym, swimming pool and exercise classes at Pershore Leisure Centre.
It is estimated that 30% of people in Wychavon do not take part in the recommended amount of exercise and this scheme aims to work towards reducing that figure. The programme also hopes to address body confidence issues in young people as well as provide education on other aspects of healthy living such as nutrition and physical exercise.
Kay McBride, Area Manager at Rivers Fitness said “Introducing a partnership scheme with the local youth centre will hopefully inspire more young people to get active and live healthier lifestyles. We hope this trial proves a success so that we can roll the initiative out full time”.
Youth Worker/Centre Manager Debra Kurs agreed, saying “The benefits of gym access have proven to be invaluable. This initiative has been such a welcome contribution to the emotional and physical well-being of two of our young women Youth Club members; especially during a time of Exam stress, also it is important to remember that there are many families on low income in Pershore, many who cannot afford the cost of regular gym access. Thank you Rivers Management for your support”.
